Dental Implants Treatment FAQ’s

What are dental implants ?

A dental implant  is a replacement tooth “root” made out of titanium. It is shaped like a screw and is inserted into the jaw bone to support a dental prosthesis, such as a crown, bridge or denture. This titanium screw is able to fuse with the jaw, providing a secure, long-term solution to restore your tooth and improve your chewing ability and smile aesthetics, and prevent bone loss.

The picture above shows a typical single-tooth dental implant solution. However, any form of attachment can be placed onto the titanium screw (dental implant). There are many different abutments. Some accept metal bars and other structures, allowing the replacement of multiple teeth.

In most cases, implant dentistry can help Brisbane patients who have lost a natural tooth, multiple teeth, or all of their teeth to maintain their oral health. Our Balmoral dentists can also use dental implants to provide additional support to dentures.

You may have been turned down in the past for dental implants due to bone loss, but our teeth implants team may be able to help with other treatments, such as bone grafting and sinus lifts. Why not contact us today and schedule a free implant consultation with Dr Sae Mi Bok?

What can dental implants do for me?

Whether you have a missing tooth or multiple teeth or require some additional support for your dentures, dental implants can help achieve just that. Remember, the abutment placed onto the implants can be changed to suit their purpose. It’s not always a dental crown that goes on top of your dental implants.

Dental Implants – How does it work?

Modern dental implants are able to fuse to the jaw through a process called osseointegration. This is when your jawbone fuses directly to the implant without soft tissue or scar tissue in between, ensuring a strong connection that can potentially last forever under the proper maintenance and care. This is possible because of titanium’s properties, as it is the most bio-compatible metal and is used in many other implants, such as knee replacement. The osseointegration of the implant gives the stability needed for any replacement crown, bridge or denture.

At Balmoral Dental Centre, we are pleased to have restored countless smiles with dental implants in Brisbane. Our team has chosen to use premium dental implant systems, predominantly Astra Tech, due to their superb osseointegration properties. Their surface and manufacturing have decades of experience behind it.

Dental implants have come a long way, and Astra Tech’s surface preparation and implant design technologies are detailed in the video below; some incredible and interesting stuff! Who knew such a small screw could have so much technology and innovation behind it! Quality does matter, and in this case, the research and evidence back it up.

What Are the Steps involved in a Dental Implants Treatment?

The dental implant procedure takes several months from start to finish consisting of several stages with recovery and healing time between each step. Below is a brief breakdown of each step of the implant journey.

Free initial consultation
During the initial consultation at our clinic, patients are assessed for their suitability for dental implants. This is your chance to ask questions and raise any concerns you may have. Our Brisbane dentist will carry out a thorough oral examination and CBCT scan to check the health and density of your jawbone and will also discuss your medical condition. Patients need to have a healthy mouth, good oral hygiene, an abundance of healthy bone in the jaw and be in sufficiently good health to undergo surgery. Having been declared suitable, our dental team will plan your implant journey virtually and will schedule a day for surgery.

Day of Surgery
The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, and minor surgery is performed to gradually drill away bone until a sufficient-sized gap is created. The implant is then placed into the bone with minimal force. Once the surgery is over, patients need to wait for the dental implants to fuse with the surrounding bone tissue in a process known as osseointegration.

Placing the abutment and crown
After 3-4 months of healing (sometimes more, pending a decision made by the surgeon), the implant is ready to be restored.

The gums are opened, an impression coping is inserted, and a specific record of the mouth is taken, which includes information on the depth of the implant and its angulation.

Using this information, the correct abutment and the prosthesis, in this case, a crown, are then fabricated custom to the mouth.

The crown and abutment are then placed, and the new tooth is ready for action!

Why choose dental implants over other solutions?

In most cases, Brisbane dentists recommend dental implants because they have the highest rate of success and the longest lifespan among various options. The technology has also improved dramatically in the last few years, and our team at Balmoral Dental Centre has a wealth of experience with impressive success rates.

Planning and pre-preparation are key. We control every step of the procedure, from the removal of the tooth to the bone grafting to the actual surgery.

We also invest in the very best dental materials, such as Astra Tech implants from Dentsply and Geistlich graft materials for bone and gum grafts.

What are the benefits of Dental Implants treatment over other solutions?

For missing teeth, dental implants offer benefits that other tooth replacement options, like dentures or bridges, can’t provide. Here are the top benefits of this innovative option:

  • Prevents Bone Loss

Usually, when you bite down on your teeth, they exert forces that are transferred into the jawbone. This keeps the jawbone nice and firm to support the weight and forces the teeth to bear it. After a tooth is lost, the jawbone is no longer needed to support the tooth, so the body eventually starts to resorb away the bone, causing bone loss and gum recession. Not only does it make it more difficult to support an implant, but prostheses, such as dentures, would not sit as securely due to there being less retention. And a crown and bridge would not be as aesthetic due to the gum recession now creating a gap. Getting an implant prevents bone loss because when you bite down on an implant-supported tooth, you exert the same kind of force onto the jawbone, whereas when you bite down on a bridge or denture, they are just resting on top of your gum and not supported in the jawbone.

  • Look younger

Bone loss causes the jaw to shrink over time and the facial structures to sag, giving a person that hollow, sunken look that makes them look older than their years. Dental implants replace missing teeth and prevent bone loss and help fill out the face to provide a rounded and more youthful appearance.

  • Restores Bite Force

Because implants are anchored directly into the jawbone, they allow you to bite down with just as much force as you could use with your natural teeth. Other replacement options, such as a denture, don’t restore as much of the bite force as they are just sitting on top of the gum and not anchored in place. Even better, most patients find they can eat just about anything they want, from a crunchy apple to a succulent steak. No more scouring the menu for soft food choices!

  • Restores Biting Sensation

With implants, due to the implant being anchored down into the jawbone, there is physical feedback when biting down, and many patients find that to be very satisfying compared to a denture that has no feedback.

  • A Permanent Solution to Tooth Loss
Other tooth replacement options will need to be repaired or replaced periodically. But dental implants are designed to last for the rest of your life, especially with good maintenance, monitoring and home care.

Why do I need a Dental Implant?

There are many reasons why you may need implants. Some common reasons for dental implant solutions are:

  • Missing, infected, cracked or unsightly teeth

  • Accidents or sporting injuries involving teeth

  • Permanent or temporary denture solutions

  • Cosmetic improvement
