Dentistry for Kids
A lifetime of good oral health starts with the habits we develop as children, so encouraging good habits is important.
Good habits include:
- Brushing twice a day, after breakfast and before bed
- Maintaining a good diet including avoiding foods with high sugar content
- Drinking lots of water
- Regular dental checks
Children tend to be less anxious in a familiar environment. For more comfortable visits for both children and parents, we recommend children first see the dentist within 6 months of getting their first tooth.
To prepare for your child’s first dental visit, play ‘dentist’ at home by counting their teeth and letting them look in your mouth and count yours. Read a story about a first dental visit to allay fears and don’t talk about things like needles or drills. Also, avoid using phrases like “It won’t hurt” as this generally conveys your own fears.
Ideally, it’s best if your child doesn’t have a toothache and need treatment on their first dental visit so early checks are important. We do our best to provide treatment in our office and reduce avoidable visits for treatment under general anesthetic.
While we can look after the majority of children’s full dental care, occasionally we may recommend a visit to a pediatric dentist for specialist attention.
