There are many mouthguards available for purchase directly from pharmacies or sports stores which vary in price, durability, fit and quality. They are rarely a perfect fit, and even those that adapt to the teeth, such as the popular 'boil and bite' types, are easily deformed and offer uneven force distribution and protection.
Poorly fit mouthguards are prone to falling out and may not offer the best protection from sever impact on your teeth and jaws. They are also bulkier which can cause difficulties when talking and breathing, cause muscle soreness and do actually do more harm than good.
Why invest in a customized mouthguard?
Custom dentist-made mouthguards offer unrivaled fit, durability and safety. They are made from a spongy material to absorb shock and fit to evenly distribute forces across the entire mouthguard. Importantly, they are professionally designed to create space in the jaw joint between the jawbone and skull when it is worn in the mouth. This helps to prevent the jaw bone from impacting the skull, which reduces the chance of concussion or fractures.
How it's made
First your mouth is assessed to determine the fit, thickness and coverage required.
We take an impression of your teeth to produce a precise plaster model. This model is sent to a laboratory to be used to construct your custom fitted mouthguard.
We double check the fit before providing you with a protective storage case and instructions on how to clean and care for your new mouthguard.
Are mouth guards just for althletes?
Mouthguards are great for protecting teeth on the sports field, but they’re also important in treating other problems including teeth-grinding. Check out this page for more information on teeth-grinding.
