At Balmoral Dental Centre, we strongly recommend custom fitted mouthguards to all our patients who are involved in contact sports, to protect your teeth as knocked out or damaged teeth are a common occurrence due to trauma in sports. Worse, in some cases, missing teeth may need to be replaced with dental implants or dentures.  A professionally-fitted custom mouthguard can help significantly reduce the risk of sporting injuries to the teeth and jaw.

Store-bought Mouthguards

There are many mouthguards available for purchase directly from pharmacies or sports stores which vary in price, durability, fit and quality. They are rarely a perfect fit, and even those that adapt to the teeth, such as the popular ‘boil and bite’ types, are easily deformed and offer uneven force distribution and protection.

Poorly fit mouthguards are prone to falling out and may not offer the best protection from sever impact on your teeth and jaws. They are also bulkier which can cause difficulties when talking and breathing, cause muscle soreness and do actually do more harm than good.
